Editorial Guidelines for Caltech Today and Ion Caltech

Both Caltech Today and Ion Caltech are resources created for the Caltech community to foster engagement with and pride in the Institute.

Caltech Today is an internally focused webpage that draws content from across the public Caltech website, providing a space where information from and about the campus community can be accessed.

Ion Caltech is a weekly, internally focused opt-out newsletter in which information on campus news, announcements, and events is curated from content that can be found on Caltech Today and the Caltech homepage.

Caltech Today Content for "Announcements from Campus Groups" and "Featured Events"

NOTE: Content added to or suggested for either of these sections is subject to review and may be edited; we reserve the right not to display material that is not appropriate for the Caltech Today audience.

  • Announcements from campus groups, including individual departments and divisions, can be posted to this section of Caltech Today by creating a campus announcement.
  • Events to be considered for the Featured Events section must first be posted to the Institute Calendar.
  • We will include on Caltech Today (and in Ion Caltech) items that meet most of the following guidelines:
    • The event or announcement provides information that will spur the community to action.
    • The event or announcement is timely; we prefer to highlight events that are upcoming or announcements that are forward-looking rather than summaries of what has already occurred.
    • The event or announcement is of broad interest/applicable to a wide portion of the Caltech community.
    • NOTE: Occasionally we make exceptions to our guidelines. If you would like input on whether something is appropriate for the Announcements section of Caltech Today, contact us at [email protected].

Ion Caltech Top Story

An Ion Caltech top story is the photo-caption article that is featured at the top of each newsletter. Feel free to pitch us ideas at [email protected]. Keep in mind the following:

  • Most top stories will come from items already posted on the Campus Announcements and Updates or Institute Calendar pages.
  • All top stories need a compelling image (or idea for a compelling image) to accompany them.
  • In addition, a story is more likely to be chosen for this spot if:
    • The submission is an event or announcement providing information that will spur the community to action.
    • The idea is timely; we prefer to highlight events that are upcoming or announcements that are forward-looking rather than summaries of what has already occurred.
    • The story is of broad interest/applicable to a wide portion of the Caltech community.
