The events of 9/11 spurred Kornfield's research team to begin research on polymers that, when added to fuels like gasoline, minimize the risk of explosion when ignited. These polymers, known as megasupramolecules, change the way liquid fuels flow and could help reduce fatalities and injuries from plane crashes, auto accidents, and IED attacks on the battlefield.

This event is free and open to the public; however, registration is requested via Eventbrite. Registration is not a guaranteed seat or a reserved ticket*. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

* Reserved tickets are printed tickets available in advance from the Caltech Ticket Office to members of The Friends of Beckman Auditorium and The Caltech Associates, and to Caltech alumni. A reserved ticket guarantees a seat until 7:45 p.m., and grants access to a reserved section in the auditorium. About the Speaker

Julia A. Kornfield is Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

About the Series

Since 1922, The Earnest C. Watson Lecture Series has has brought Caltech's most innovative scientific research to the public. The series is named for Earnest C. Watson, a professor of physics at Caltech from 1919 until 1959. Spotlighting a small selection of the pioneering research Caltech's faculty is currently conducting, the Watson Lectures are geared toward a general audience, as part of the Institute's ongoing commitment to benefiting the local community through education and outreach.
