Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Scholar Union Negotiations to Begin

May 28, 2024

To: The Campus Community
From: Kaushik Bhattacharya, Vice Provost
David C. Chan, Faculty Dean of Graduate Studies
Kevin M. Gilmartin, Vice President and Faculty Dean of Students

This week collective bargaining begins between Caltech and the Caltech Graduate Researchers and Postdocs United (CGPU-UAW) bargaining units for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. This will be the first meeting of representatives from the Institute and the CGPU-UAW.

On February 15, 2024, the National Labor Relations Board certified the results of the graduate student and postdoctoral scholar elections. The bargaining will cover matters concerning the terms and conditions related to research appointments and teaching appointments, including wages, benefits, and other working conditions. Faculty members and representatives from Human Resources and the General Counsel's office will be among the individuals representing Caltech; graduate students and postdoctoral bargaining units will be represented by elected representatives and UAW staff.

The Institute will bargain in good faith and remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the success and well-being of all members of our community in a world-leading and inclusive research and educational environment.

Further updates on the collective bargaining process, including significant points of discussion or action, and the details of an agreed upon contract will be provided, as appropriate, through Caltech's Unionization Information website and the weekly Ion Caltech newsletters. Members of the community may direct individual comments or questions about the process to [email protected].
