Changes to Microsoft Office and Windows Licensing

December 12, 2019

As required by Microsoft, beginning in November, Caltech started transitioning from Microsoft volume licensing to subscription-based licensing. This license is used for the Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Windows.

Most of the Caltech community will NOT be impacted and will continue to have access to the full version of Office. However, guests, visitors, retirees (non-faculty), and most external affiliates, will no longer be able to install the full version of Office. Office Online will be available to these users.

In addition, because this is a subscription-based license, only people with an active affiliation at Caltech are eligible to receive this software. When a person is no longer actively employed at Caltech, they will be transitioned off of the software.
