Chris Lewicki, President and Chief Engineer, Planetary Resources,

Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Talk No. 1: 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., Hameetman Auditorium, Caltech

Talk No. 2: 4:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Building 321 Auditorium, JPL

To receive lunch at the Caltech talk, you must R.S.V.P. by May 10 at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1AzKgNYSl5fxpAhC11vZL11SIJEYnPNuo4yyosHO6uUY/viewform.

How do you mine an asteroid? How do you get funding, motivate your team, find credible technical solutions, and convince others you can do it? Chris Lewicki tackled similar challenges while at JPL for other audacious endeavors like the Mars Exploration Rovers and the Phoenix Lander. Chris will engage us in a timely, thought-provoking discussion about mining asteroids—a realm previously explored only in science fiction.

Chris performed system engineering development and participated in assembly, test, and launch operations for both the Mars Exploration Rovers and the Phoenix Lander. He was flight director for the rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and the surface mission manager for Phoenix. The recipient of two NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals, he has an asteroid named in his honor: 13609 Lewicki. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona.

These events are free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome. After the Caltech talk, you can pick up a box lunch just outside the door. Because of security requirements at JPL, Campus personnel and retirees without JPL badges must have a JPL employee submit a visitor request and be their escort. For more information about this event, please e-mail [email protected] or call Steve Matousek, (818) 354-6689.

Your membership in CMA is what inspires us to bring great speakers and events to Caltech (Campus and JPL). If you enjoy attending these events, please support CMA so we can continue to provide the best in thought-provoking engagements. Membership is open to all active and retired employees of Caltech and to contract employees as affiliate members. See http://cma.jpl.nasa.gov for more information about our mission.
