Vicki Kirschenbaum has been a volunteer with the Sierra Club Beyond Coal campaign for about two years. She is an actress, writer, and solo performance artist who got involved in the campaign because of concerns about global warming. She will talk about how and why she got involved in the campaign, the good news on the Beyond Coal front across the country, and highlights of the local efforts to get the City of Los Angeles to phase out all coal-fired power by 2020. Burning coal to make electricity is devastating in so many ways: it causes higher rates of cancer, stroke, and respiratory diseases; it requires billions of gallons of water annually; it is the number one cause of global warming. Pasadena also gets electricity from the one of the two remote coal-fired power plants that supply Los Angeles; currently Pasadena gets over 60% of its power from coal. Come learn more! Feel free to bring friends.
