We welcome you to an evening of conversation and lectures on Los Angeles' oldest Latinx art center, Self Help Graphics and Art. Officially launched in 1973 during the Chicano Movement, Self Help Graphics & Art's commitment to art, dignity for all, and empowerment of Chicanx and Latinx artists have made it one of the most cherished cultural centers in the Latinx imaginary. Join us as we explore the history and future of this institution on the occasion of the recently published anthology exploring its longevity, Self Help Graphics at Fifty: A Cornerstone of Latinx Art and Collaborative Artmaking (eds. Tatiana Reinoza and Karen Mary Davalos, UC Press, 2023). The definitive history of a cherished East Los Angeles institution over five decades of art making and community building, students will have the unique opportunity to speak with contributors to the anthology, as well as experts on contemporary printmaking, Los Angeles cultural politics, Latinx and Chicanx art history, and community art history.
