Teaching Philosophy Workshop - Online Zoom Event

Most academic job applications ask for a teaching statement (also called a teaching philosophy). This workshop will help you understand the nature and purpose of this document and offer some models to consider as you undertake writing your own.

The workshop will be led by CTLO Interim Director, Dr. Susanne Hall. Dr. Hall began her work at Caltech in Fall 2012 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Duke University's Thompson Writing Program. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Hall brings to her work as the interim director of the CTLO a career-long focus on teaching and learning across the disciplines. Her work at Caltech has focused on supporting the teaching and learning of writing. In addition to her work directing the CTLO and the Hixon Writing Center, she regularly teaches writing courses to undergraduates, including Introduction to Academic Writing (Wr 2), Principles and Practices of Academic Writing (Wr 4), and Writing About Science (En 84). 

Dr. Hall's research interests are in the field of writing studies. She is a Co-PI of an NSF-funded study of text recycling in scientific research writing. Her broader interests include learning transfer and how writing centers can promote it, particularly across the boundaries between the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields. She is an editor of Prompt, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to college writing assignments across disciplines. You can find links to her published writing via ORCID.
