ABSTRACT: In the 1D neutrino-driven explosion paradigm, the final fate of a massive star, either explosion as a supernova or collapse into a black hole, depends sensitively on the structure of the star's core immediately preceding core-collapse. That final structure is set by the star's evolutionary history. I present a detailed study of the core structures of massive stars, showing how basic properties of the core at carbon ignition map onto final structures and, ultimately, final fate. I will then show how envelope stripping and merging with a companion change a star's core structure in distinct ways. Lastly, I will discuss the implications of binary interaction for the final fates of massive stars.
