Simon Winchester: "How to Write Big Books about Big Subjects"

Simon Winchester is a British writer, journalist, and broadcaster who studied geology at Oxford and has written for Condé Nast Traveler, Smithsonian, and National Geographic.

His many books include The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of The Oxford English Dictionary; The Map that Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology; and A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906. Each of these have both been New York Times bestsellers and appeared on numerous best and notable lists. Winchester was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2006.

He lives in Massachusetts and New York City.

In addition to this special lecture, Winchester is scheduled to deliver a talk entitled "William Smith: The Man, His Map, and the Democratization of Geology" at 7:30 p.m. in Rothenberg Hall at the Huntington Library.
