The Southern California Seismic Network: Earthquake Monitoring Operations & Research
Gabrielle Tepp, Seismo Lab, Caltech,

Ettore Biondi, Seismo Lab, Caltech,

The Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) has a long history, going back to the days of Harry Wood and Charles Richter. In the decades since, the SCSN has grown to operate over 400 seismic stations in Southern California, play a key role in earthquake early warning, and become a leader of implementing new algorithms and systems into network operations, often starting from research conducted in the Seismo Lab. The Southern California Earthquake Data Center (SCEDC) manages and distributes incoming seismic and strong motion data along with the earthquake catalog produced by SCSN analysts. Additionally, the SCSN is the authoritative network for Southern California and must respond to large magnitude earthquakes, helping with media response and coordination with other agencies. In this presentation, we'll provide an overview of the SCSN and SCEDC, share examples of on-going projects to bring machine learning and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) into monitoring operations, and discuss how researchers in the Seismo Lab can work with us and our data.
