Catalysis Development Targeting Small Molecules to Proteins
Motomu Kanai, Professor of Chemistry, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Tokyo,

We are pursuing to expand the scope of catalysis in organic synthesis as well as life science. Because "life is simply a matter of chemistry", artificial catalysis under physiologic conditions will be a new modal of medicine (catalysis medicine). I will present our recent results in: 1) (aerobic) oxidative coupling and peptide cleavage reactions through activation of stable molecules [1], 2) protecting group-minimum C˗C bond-forming asymmetric catalysis [2], and 3) organo-catalyzed visible light photo-oxygenation of amyloid beta (Ab) and its effects on aggregation properties and neurotoxicity of Abeta [3].
