Pursuing the Molecular Medicine Potential of Natural Products through Precision Synthesis
Karl A. Scheidt, Professor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Northwestern University,

Natural products continue to play a vital and unique role in 21st century translational research and molecular medicine.  Our research program is heavily involved in the development of new strategies and techniques to create promising molecules and related chemical probes with desirable biological attributes.  Over the past decade, we have successfully completed convergent and flexible syntheses which have fueled new biological understandings and medical advances.  Our continued focus involves leveraging the power of chemical synthesis by moving tailor made compounds towards clinical endpoints and ultimately, realize the bench to bedside promise of many of nature's natural sources of molecular complexity.  Our recent progress involving compounds with CNS and cancer activity each inspired by specific natural products will be presented.
