Abstract: This cross-disciplinary talk will engage perspectives from the learning sciences to provide new conceptual resources for specifying the distinctive value of studying the arts and interpretive humanities. Drawing on accounts of perceptual learning, expertise, and higher education's exclusionary history, it will show how literature and literary study prepare us to perceive, understand, and experience the world in more discriminating and flexible ways.
