Set in East Los Angeles, Real Women Have Curves (2002 / 90 min.) is an inspiring story of a smart young Latina at the verge of adulthood. Introducing the film and hosting a post-film discussion, will be its acclaimed lead actress America Ferrera.

Ferrera plays Ana, a 17-year old Mexican-American teenager who is torn between following her own ambitions to attend university or her mother's desire to have her stay home and provide for the family. Strong-willed and rebellious, Ana wishes to defy her mother's instructions, but agrees to help at her sister's sewing factory that summer. Superbly talented, Ferrera shines as Ana, captivating audiences with her touching portrayal of Ana as an intelligent full-bodied Latina trying to make a niche for herself in the world by coming to terms with her own desires, her culture's demands and the injustices of business.

Special Guest: America Ferrera, actress

Free public screenings of the Ethnic Visions Film Series are offered in conjunction with an advanced Humanities course being taught by Dr. Robert Rosenstone, Caltech Professor of History. He hopes that the series will be "a way of understanding our multicultural society, as well as learning something about the similarities and differences in the processes of immigration, acculturation, and Americanization." Most screenings will include guests associated with the films shown. These visits are made possible with support from the President's Diversity Initiative Fund. All screening begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays. The full series includes:
