Optimal quantum metrology with programmable quantum sensors

Abstract: We develop variational quantum algorithms for quantum interferometry, where entangled input states and collective measurements are represented by variational quantum circuits. As cost function to be optimized we adopt the signal to noise ratio for a finite dynamic range of the phase, as motivated by application in atomic clocks. We show that low depth circuits provide already provide results close to the optimal interferometer. Our theoretical study is complemented by an experiment with a trapped ion quantum computer (with up to 26 ions) acting as programmable quantum sensor. The experiment demonstrates improvement beyond squeezing in Ramsey interferometer, and finds optimal variational parameters in an "on device" quantum feedback loop.
