Simulating Quantum Field Theories with Qubit Models
Alex Buser, Graduate Student, Preskill Group,

Abstract: Quantum computers excel at reproducing the real-time dynamics of highly-entangled quantum systems. Naturally, one would like to use them to study quantum field theories, where classical methods encounter intractable problems in many interesting scenarios. To simulate quantum field theories on a digital quantum device, the theory must be discretized in such a way that it can be easily represented by qubits. Such discretization methods exist for generic field theories involving scalar bosons, fermions, and gauge particles, however the effects of discretization are not entirely understood. Furthermore, for near-term devices, it is important to simplify the interactions between qubits as much as possible, to minimize the resource cost of the simulation. In this talk, I will discuss my recent work on the O(3) non-linear sigma model, a simple field theory sharing some interesting properties with QCD, showing that it can be obtained as the continuum limit of a simple lattice model involving two qubits per lattice site near a quantum critical point, and discuss the implications for quantum simulation.
