On-chip quantum memories for telecom photons using ensembles of erbium ions
Ioana Craiciu, Graduate Student, Faraon Group,

Abstract: Photons make excellent qubits if your aim is to send quantum information from one place to another. They travel fast and can maintain their coherence in doing so. However, it's really hard to make photons stay in one place for any length of time.

How could you possibly make a photon stay in one place? And why would you want to? Come to the IQIM seminar this week to find out. My talk will focus on our efforts to make quantum memories for photons using microresonators coupled to an ensemble of erbium ions in the solid state. I will show you our work so far in making said microresonator cavities, and in characterizing their coupling to ensembles of erbium ions. I will then show you our initial optical storage results, and conclude with our plan to achieve an on-demand quantum memory in this system.
