Eleven-dimensional Supergravity with Four Off-shell Supersymmetries

Off-shell supersymmetry of higher-derivative corrections to 2-derivative actions generally leads to an infinite set of ever-higher-derivative corrections. In some cases, the result is a potentially large part of an effective action for some more fundamental theory. While it is generally expected to be impossible to describe more than eight Poincaré supersymmetries this way, some constructions may be simplified considerably even if only a fraction of them closes off-shell. In this talk, I will describe eleven-dimensional supergravity with four of the 32 supersymmetries manifest and the status of a project to construct the famous ∫C⋀X₈ invariant.
