Der Hauptmann von Köpenick || 1956 || Directed by Helmut Käutner

Oscar nomination as best foreign film 1957.

Based on Carl Zuckmayer's (1886 -1977) popular play.

A young shoemaker is arrested for stealing a small amount of money, and is released after being jailed for 15 years. He needs a passport to get a job and start anew, but without a job he doesn't get one; and without it he can't get a job. Now he is caught in Prussian bureaucracy, and can't see a solution. Until, in a Second-Hand Shop he sees a Prussian Uniform that fits him like a second skin... Based on a true incident in Berlin in 1906 –(you can find the court papers at the district court of Köpenick)

A typical 1950's German film, genuine "Pantoffelkino" as it was enormously popular in that era with one of its most popular (gramma's matinee idol) actors.
