An impeccably crafted love story and Cold War thriller. - East Germany, 1980. Barbara (Nina Hoss), physician at the prestigious Charité Hospital in Berlin is assigned to a rural medical clinic as punishment for applying for an exit visa. Placed in a State apartment, Barbara is obviously under surveillance by the Stasi. The world of all East Germans is one of constant scrutiny, omnipresent informers, and a huge gap between private and public behavior. There is a kind of constant tension. You never know exactly who is who. What they really think. And really do.
