How Transcription Circuits Evolve
Alexander (Sandy) Johnson,
professor and vice chair,
Microbiology and Immunology,
UC San Francisco,
Changes in gene transcription networks are a major source of evolutionary novelty. By comparing networks across a wide variety of yeast species, we have documented large-scale reconfigurations of networks over evolutionary time scales. Biochemical and genetic analyses of specific cases have revealed molecular mechanisms through which this rewiring has occurred as well as the consequences of the rewiring.
