"By far the most important event in my life": Charles Darwin's recollections of his voyage on HMS Beagle
Janet Browne, Aramont Professor of the History of Science, Harvard University,

Charles Darwin always acknowledged that the Beagle voyage (1831-36), transformed his intellectual aims and generated fundamental questions about species, while providing him with remarkable opportunities to gain a deep understanding of global natural history. This talk focuses on Darwin's recollections of the voyage in his autobiography and examines the way that he retrospectively constructed a teleology of scientific discovery.
