Talk Title: Accessible Chemical Education for Visually Impaired Learners
Event Description: Chemistry education is challenging for many students, given that they must master both lecture content and laboratory techniques. If course materials and activities are not carefully designed, the content can be impossible to access for students with vision impairment (VI). This workshop will introduce common barriers faced by chemistry students with VI and demonstrate how these barriers can be overcome by creating accessible documents and designing experiments to be done as independently and safely as possible. The session will focus on simple strategies for creating accessible lecture slides (PowerPoint), documents (Word), and laboratory activities. This workshop is intended to teach these skills through hands-on content creation/editing, so participants are encouraged to bring their computers and their own Word and/or PowerPoint files. We will work together to evaluate these documents and remediate any accessibility issues.
