Coffee & Career: Nafees Bin Zafar

Join the Coffee & Career for an informal coffee hour chat with our guest, Nafees Bin Zafar, a visual effects engineer working in film. Nafees develops new types of visual effects and software for the film industry. He has worked in engineering and management roles at Digital Domain, and at DreamWorks Animation.

Nafees has contributed to many films over the past 17 years such as 2012, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and the Kung Fu Panda franchise. In 2008 he won an Academy Award for his work on pioneering digital fluid effects now used throughout the visual effects industry. In 2015 he received an Academy Award for the development of simulated large-scale destruction effects.

Nafees believes in sharing research, and building strong ties between academia and industry. He has also served as a member of the Digital Imaging Technology Subcommittee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which investigates groundbreaking technical contributions to the film industry for Academy Awards. In 2017, he was elected as a member of the visual effect branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

He will talk about computer graphics research in the movie industry. He will also share his experience, perspectives, and advice on working in entertainment.
