JPL, von Karman Auditorium

The PHD Movie is a live-action adaptation of the popular online comic strip created by Jorge Cham. Filmed on location at and produced in partnership with Caltech, it introduces audiences to the unique and funny culture of academia and follows four graduate students (Cecilia, Mike, Tajel, and the "Nameless Grad Student") as they struggle to find balance between research, teaching, and their personal lives with humor and heart. The PHD Movie was produced and directed by and stars real doctoral students and researchers. What other picture features not one, but two MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award recipients?

Don't miss this event. The film has screened at over 450 universities and research centers on all seven continents. Cham will introduce the film and after the screening, along with cast members, will answer questions from the audience.

Cham's PHD comics have made him a celebrity among graduate students. Often called the Dilbert of academia, PHD is published online where it receives over seven million page views a month from over a thousand universities and colleges worldwide. Cham started writing PHD as a graduate student at Stanford and kept it up through his postdoctoral work at Caltech. In 2005, he decided to leave academia and pursue his career as a cartoonist and speaker full time. He has been syndicated in several university newspapers and has published four book collections and been featured on NPR.

This event is free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome.
