CMA presents "News Literacy in the Post-Fact Era"

Tuesday, March 14, 2017
4:40pm to 6:00pm
Add to Cal
JPL, von Karman Auditorium
Megan Garvey, Deputy Managing Editor, Los Angeles Times,

Fake news. It's a term that's been wielded by many against some of the most venerable mainstream publications in this country, including the Los Angeles Times. But what is "fake news"? It should refer to news that is literally false—made up. That's very different than news that is biased. And it's not stories that turn out to be incorrect but were based on good-faith reporting. So how has "fake news" come to be interchangeable with news you don't agree with, and why should that worry all of us? Please join us as Megan Garvey takes you behind the scenes on the reporting process and explains how you can decide for yourself if the news source is legitimate.

Megan Garvey is a deputy managing editor for the Los Angeles Times and has broad responsibility for the digital report, including breaking news, the home page, the data team, and the presentation of online projects. Garvey has worked at The Times since 1998 and held a variety of reporting and editing positions before being promoted to deputy managing editor in 2014. She has managed a series of innovative online projects, including Mapping L.A., Crime L.A., the Homicide Report, and the Los Angeles Times Teacher Ratings database. Garvey has managed and edited several of The Times' award-winning reports, including the most recent Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News coverage of the San Bernardino terrorist attack. Before joining The Times, Garvey worked as a features writer at The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina, and she got her professional start as a copy aide at The Washington Post. She graduated with honors from the University of Chicago with a degree in history.
