Sustainability activities at Caltech aim to enhance the university s core mission of research and education by reducing its environmental impact and promoting stewardship within the Caltech community. John Onderdonk will discuss Caltech s efforts to improve the sustainability of the campus in the areas of energy, climate, and water. Highlights will include the most energy-efficient physical science laboratory in the nation and on-campus solar photovoltaic and fuel cell installations.

Immediately following the talk, there will be a tour of the Linde + Robinson Laboratory for Global Environmental Science, which recently received a 2012 Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award. One of Caltech's oldest buildings, the structure was built in 1932 as an astronomy laboratory and has undergone extensive renovations over the past two years. Linde + Robinson is the nation s first laboratory constructed in an existing historic building to earn a LEED Platinum rating.

John Onderdonk is responsible for strategic planning to improve environmental performance in the areas of energy, climate, water, waste, supply chain, transportation, and building infrastructure. Prior to joining Caltech, Mr. Onderdonk served as the southwest regional manager for AIG Environmental, where he developed liability transfer programs for brownfield redevelopment clients. He has also worked as an environmental consultant, helping corporate clients integrate sustainability into their business practices and address environmental regulations. He holds a master s degree in corporate environmental management from the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and a bachelor s degree in environmental science and economics from the University of Oregon.
