JPL Talk (open to the JPL and Campus communities)

Date: Friday, June 20, 2014

Time: 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.

Place: Flight Projects Center Auditorium (Building 321), JPL

The last decade of the past century witnessed a revolution in developing and applying mathematical techniques to origami, the centuries-old Japanese art of paper-folding. In his JPL talk on June 20, Robert Lang will describe how geometric concepts were used to solve the problem of efficiently folding a shape with an arbitrary number and arrangement of flaps, and along the way, enabled origami designs of mind-blowing complexity and realism. Join us as he discusses how origami has enabled safer airbags, Brobdingnagian space telescopes, and more.

On June 19, there will be a CMA-members-only reception featuring Robert Lang (which will be followed by a public reception), and an exhibition of his origami art. Members may each bring one guest. To register for the reception, provide your information at http://goo.gl/HeSmqS by June 12. If you are not a CMA member, or have not renewed your membership for FY 2014, please complete and mail the membership form, at http://cma.jpl.nasa.gov/membership.html. After you apply for membership, go ahead and register for this event.

Robert Lang is one of the foremost origami artists in the world as well as a pioneer in computational origami and the development of formal design algorithms for folding. With a Ph.D. in applied physics from Caltech, he has authored or co-authored over 80 papers and holds 45 patents related to lasers and optoelectronics and authored or contributed to 12 books and a CD-ROM on origami. He received Caltech's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, in 2009 and was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013.

These events are free. The JPL talk is open to all members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees. Because of security requirements for the JPL talk, individuals without JPL badges must have a Laboratory employee or resident affiliate submit a visitor request and be their escort.
