CMA presents "Exploring the Deep Sea Aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute's Falkor"

Tuesday, May 16, 2017
4:45pm to 6:00pm
Add to Cal
JPL, von Karman Auditorium
Carlie Wiener, Schmidt Ocean Institute,
Victor Zykov, Schmidt Ocean Institute,

High pressures and sharp thermal and pH gradients at the deep sea hydrothermal vent sites give rise to some of the most extreme and unique habitats on Earth. Spontaneous formation of complex organic molecules observed at these sites suggests that similar mechanisms could lead to the emergence of life on other watery worlds within and outside of the solar system.

Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is a nonprofit research vessel operator founded in 2009 by Eric and Wendy Schmidt to accelerate the understanding of our oceans through technical innovation and open sharing of information, fostering collaborations with the broad international community of ocean scientists and technology developers. Deep sea science is among the research areas SOI supports with its focus on the advancement of methods, practices, and technologies in ocean sciences. Please join us as Dr. Carlie Wiener and Dr. Victor Zykov discuss how SOI supports ocean-related research and technology development with the research vessel Falkor, which provides state-of-the-art laboratories and computing and communication facilities.

Dr. Carlie Wiener serves as SOI's communication manager and has over ten years of experience in marine science communications. She received her master's and doctorate degrees in environmental studies from York University in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Victor Zykov leads the development of research programs and strategic initiatives for SOI. He received a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering and robotics from Cornell University.

This event is free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome. Caltech personnel and guests can access the auditorium via the external gate; no visitor badging or escort is needed. Your membership in CMA is what inspires us to bring great speakers and events to Caltech (Campus and JPL). If you enjoy attending these events, please support CMA so we can continue to provide the best in thought-provoking engagements. Membership is open to all active and retired employees of Caltech and to contract employees as affiliate members. See http://cma.jpl.nasa.gov for more information about our mission.
