CALTECH MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (CMA), a leadership forum, presents "Europa Gets Reel: A Screening of Europa Report and Panel Discussion," with Sebastián Cordero, director, and JPL Scientists Kevin Hand and Steve Vance.

Dates:

  • Screening—Tuesday, July 16, 2013
  • Panel Discussion—Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Time: 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Place: Flight Projects Center Auditorium (Building 321), JPL

After robotic probes suggest tantalizing hints of life on Jupiter's moon Europa, a privately funded mission of six astronauts sets out to confirm the revolutionary discovery. This is the premise of the documentary-style science fiction thriller Europa Report. Join us for a special screening of the film, followed the next day (at the same time) by a panel discussion with the film's director, Sebastián Cordero, as well as JPL scientists Kevin Hand and Steve Vance.

The filmmakers consulted for more than a year with leaders in the space science and technical communities to imagine what a mission to Europa would actually look like, from ship design and mission planning to the surface of Europa itself. As science advisors on the film, Hand and Vance helped address a range of concerns as the filmmakers worked to balance cinematic storytelling with a respect for realism. Hand, Vance, and Cordero will discuss the allure of Europa and how they faced challenges both specific to the film and concerning science and technology collaborations with the film industry.

These events are free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome. Because of security requirements, Campus personnel and retirees without JPL badges must have a JPL employee or resident affiliate submit a visitor request and be their escort. The same requirements apply to retirees with expired badges or who have badges that don't say "JPL Retiree Access."

For more information about this event, please send e-mail to [email protected]; or contact Randii Wessen, (818) 354-7580, who can also assist with Visitor Control.
