Dr. Steven Koonin (BS '72), Under Secretary for Science, U.S. Department of Energy,

Transformation of the energy system while enhancing U.S. competitiveness in the global economy requires a number of technology, policy, and economic levers. Steven Koonin will address U.S. energy challenges in the areas of security, competitiveness, and environmental impacts. He will also discuss the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Quadrennial Technology Review (http://energy.gov/qtr), which is designed to put these issues into context and provide a framework for the DOE's energy programs.

Dr. Koonin has held the post of Under Secretary for Science in the DOE since May 2009. He brings to government service a distinguished career as a university professor and administrator as well as experience in industry. Dr. Koonin joined the Caltech faculty in 1975 and served as the seventh provost of Caltech from 1995 to 2004. As the Chief Scientist at BP between 2004 and 2009, Dr. Koonin developed the company's long-range technology strategy for alternative and renewable energy sources and played a central role in establishing the Energy Biosciences Institute. He received his B.S. in physics from Caltech in 1972 and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from MIT in 1975.

This event is free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome.
