Data Science: Machine Learning, Statistics, and Beyond
Padhraic Smyth, Director, UCI Data Science Initiative, Department of Computer Science and Department of Statistics, University of California, Irvine,
Location: JPL 167- Special Events Room **Please note that access to this event at JPL is restricted to those with a JPL badge.** Data science has become a widely-adopted umbrella term in recent years for a broad range of activities related to data analysis. In this talk I will provide a perspective on data science that views statistics and machine learning as core technologies but that also acknowledges the critical importance of other components in the ``lifecycle of data." The talk will discuss a number of different aspects of data science including topics such as the role of human interaction in data analysis and balancing the goals of interpretation and prediction. The talk will conclude by looking at education: how should we train the next generation of data analysts? I will briefly describe how we are approaching this problem at UCI via the UCI Data Science Initiative and our recently-introduced undergraduate major in Data Science. Coordinated by the Center for Data Science and Technology (Div 39)
