Card Writing for Chinese Human Rights Lawyer Gao Zhisheng
- Public Event
Gao Zhisheng is one of the most respected human rights lawyers in China. The Ministry of Justice named him "one of the nation's top 10 lawyers" in 2001 for his pro bono works on public interest cases before he started to take human rights cases in 2005. Since then, Gao Zhisheng has been subjected to enforced disappearance, torture, illegal house arrest, and detention resulting from his work, which includes defending human rights activists and religious minorities and documenting sensitive human rights abuses in China. He was "disappeared" by the Chinese authority on August 13, 2017. His whereabouts have been unknown since then. We will write cards to his family and sign a petition for his release.
The event is free and open to the public. More information about Gao Zhisheng, adopted prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International Group 22, can be found here: http://www.its.caltech.edu/%7Eaigp22/GaoPOC/Gao.html
Tea and light refreshments will be served. There is no program for this event. You can stop by at any time during the hour to write a card and/or sign a petition.
