Advocacy for Refugees with Shukry Cattan
Shukry Cattan, International Rescue Committee - Los Angeles,
Shukry Cattan is a caseworker at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Los Angeles office currently transitioning his work with refugees to the Tiyya Foundation in Orange Country. He is responsible for the resettlement of refugees; providing employment, health, transportation and other services. As an advocate for refugee rights, Shukry is currently raising awareness around the conditions of Somalis in Kenya and pressuring local representatives to support the resettlement and family reunification of Somalis in Los Angeles and Orange County. He recently partnered with Soccer Without Borders to complete a summer youth soccer camp for the refugee community in the city of Glendale. The IRC Los Angeles office hopes to continue developing new programs and services for refugees to assist with their transition to life in the United States.

Mr. Cattan also spent several months volunteering at Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan where he worked on youth and ESL programs. He is currently working on environmental projects with the Tiyya Foundation to develop clean sources of water for residents at the Jerash Refugee Camp.

Mr. Cattan will be discussing his role as a caseworker at the IRC-Los Angeles office with a special focus on the process of resettlement, local advocacy issues and new programs for refugees.
