Directed and Introduced by Will Ahrens
Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

When the sad, introverted Englishman Charlie Baker arrives at a Georgia fishing lodge in search
of a quiet rest, he is introduced as a foreigner who doesn't speak or understand English. Charlie
becomes an object of fascination for the denizens of the lodge and overhears very personal and
dangerous secrets. He slowly blossoms as he befriends the slow Ellard, inspires the widow
Betty, plans to foil the KKK, and earns true love…perhaps? In 1983 The Foreigner won two
Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-
Broadway Production and is now oddly topical. This wildly comic depiction of our own
absurdities may prove a cathartic reminder of the better aspects of our humanity.

Admission is $3.00 for members of the Caltech Women's Club; $4.00 for all others. Light refreshments will be served after the reading.

To dine at the Athenaeum beforehand, call (626) 395-8204 for reservations. Plan to be seated by 5:30. You are welcome to join the Playreaders table.
