Join Victoria Orphan, Caltech's James Irvine Professor of Environmental Science and Geobiology, for an intimate reception and dinner at the Athenaeum with fellow Associates and friends prior to her Earnest C. Watson Lecture "Microbial Life Support: The Invisible Living Networks That Shape Our Oceans" and learn about the scientific journey that brought her to Caltech.

She will share the inspiration for her work exploring the fascinating activities of deep-sea microbes and the geochemical processes they undergo as they collaboratively work with their environment to make life possible. Discover how her research has potential implications for climate science, the search for life on other planets, learning more about the history of life on early Earth, and why she won a coveted 2016 MacArthur "genius grant."
