Bringing Joy into Your Teaching: Workshop Led by Chris Duffy

  • How can you make your classes and lectures more fun, exciting, and joyful?
  • How can you get a packed lecture hall full of engaged students rather than an empty, silent room of sadness?
  • Most importantly, how can you enjoy teaching more while connecting with students and the public about the topics you care about?

In this workshop, we'll discover specific, practical ways to increase "the joy factor" in your teaching--whether that teaching occurs in the lecture hall, seminar room, laboratory, group meeting, or the world at large. Using real life examples (and non-examples), we'll discuss what works (and what doesn't), both with students and the general public. Taught by educator, public radio host, and comedian, Chris Duffy, this workshop will draw on lessons from academia, entertainment, and journalism.

By popular demand Chris Duffy returns to Caltech for TeachWeek after his workshop and live show recording here in 2014, featuring Professor Jose Andrade talking about Granular Materials! He is producer and host of You're the Expert, a live show, podcast, and new public radio program that uses comedy to make academic research more accessible and exciting. The Onion A.V. Club says that "education and enlightenment are the grand prizes lying behind the velvet curtain, and anyone listening [to the show] can win."
