Talk Title: Mitochondria, oxygen, and human disease
Abstract: A decline in mitochondrial number and activity are associated with a spectrum of human conditions – from rare, inborn errors of metabolism to neurodegeneration and aging. In humans the organelle is encoded by two genomes: a small, high copy number genome (mtDNA) that is maternally transmitted, and the diploid nuclear genome inherited from both parents. In this talk, I will present our lab's latest efforts employing biobank-scale genomics to understand the genetic basis for cross-talk between these genomes. Then I will discuss our lab's recent efforts to harness hypoxia – or low ambient oxygen – as a therapy for mitochondrial disease.
