In a recent clinical trial, Professor Richard Andersen and USC surgeons implanted a device in a quadriplegic patient's brain that allowed him to control a robotic arm with only his thoughts, giving him the ability to perform a natural hand-shaking gesture and even play "rock, paper, scissors." The team implanted the neuroprosthetic device in the brain's center for intentions, the
posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Join Professor Andersen to learn about his lab's latest studies, which are the first to use a high-level cortical area like the PPC for brain-machine interfaces in humans.
