Animal magnetism
Our next Community Science Event for K-12 teachers will be held on Monday, May 23 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Brown Gym at Caltech. It is free to attend, with food included, and teachers from all grade levels and school districts are welcome.
The event focuses on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) disciplinary core idea ESS2: Earth's Systems.
Prof. Joseph Kirschvink will give a seminar on his research titled "Animal magnetism." Graduate students and undergraduates from Caltech, Pasadena City College, and associated institutions will follow up by showcasing lessons they have co-developed and co-taught with local teachers; then present a fun assortment of lab demonstrations and activities spanning all levels.
- 4 pm to 4:30 pm – Badge pickup (Brown Gym)
- 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm – Keynote seminar by Prof. Kirschvink (Brown Gym)
- 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm – Lesson showcase by teachers and partners (Brown Gym)
- 6:30 pm to 8 pm – Activities and demonstrations by partners (Brown Gym).

We work together using SKIES, a knowledge-sharing platform that makes it easy to assemble and link media-rich units, and to teach classes in an active and constructivist way.
We hold three events per term, cycling between life sciences, earth sciences, and physical sciences. Our goal is to cover all the NGSS disciplinary core ideas over the next several years, incorporating all of the science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts.
