Over the past thirty years, her outspokenness, in her writing and in person, has brought the eyes of the world upon her. One of the most widely read American poets, she prides herself on being "a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English." Today, Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality.

This event is part of the Caltech Y's Social Activism Speaker Series, which focuses attention on current social and political issues by inviting prominent activists to speak to the Caltech community and the public, and to share their experiences and perspectives.
