The Caltech Alternative PhD Careers Club has the pleasure of inviting Mark Brown, PhD to speak at Caltech. Mark is a graduate of the Keck Graduate Institute's (KGI's) Professional Postdoctoral Masters program (click here for details). Now, Mark is Interim Director of the program.

Mark's talk will focus on the wide gulf that has emerged over the last few decades between the number of postdoctoral fellowship positions and the availability of academic faculty positions. Mark will talk about what skills a postdoctoral scientist needs to enter the corporate workforce, and why a PhD is not always sufficient.

This talk will discuss the career landscape facing postdocs interested in moving into industry and present different postdoctoral training opportunities in the area (including KGI). There will also be a presentation of results from a survey of over 1,200 postdoctoral scientists, which will help frame the discussion through widely held beliefs about careers industry--including several common misconceptions.
