Gronk, a nationally renowned performance artist and painter from Los Angeles, will visit Caltech on August 27 as part of Moveable Feast, a series dedicated to the exploration of Los Angeles arts and culture.
Appearing in conversation with Paul Holdengräber, curator and former founding director of The New York Public Library's LIVE from the NYPL series, Gronk will dive into his artistic journey, starting from his early days as a founding member of the avant-garde multimedia arts collective Asco, to his career as a painter, performer, and stage designer. Through stories of collaboration, experimentation, and artistic discovery, the conversation will reveal the experiences and ideas that have shaped one of LA's most influential creative voices.
Moveable Feast will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Beckman Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free with student code. Find more information and reserve tickets online.
Active in the 1970s and '80s, members of Asco created works such as "Spray Paint LACMA" and "Stations of the Cross," a piece of performance art protesting of the Vietnam War. Gronk, born in East Los Angeles, later turned his attention to drawing and painting and became well known for his murals. He also designed sets for the Los Angeles Opera and other theaters.
Moveable Feast brings together arts partners and creative voices to shape collective experiences and deepen our understanding of the world and ourselves through the arts and humanities.
Moveable Feast: Gronk in Conversation with Paul Holdengräber, is presented by Caltech in partnership with USC Museums, with the support of Mei-Lee Ney and Selma Holo. The event concludes with light refreshments, giving guests the chance to continue the conversation after the program ends.
