Paywall: The Business of Scholarship - Discussion and Screening
Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a documentary which focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevier and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google.
Prior to the screening, the Library is excited to present an impressive panel of scholars from Caltech and beyond who will discuss the role of open access and the academic publishing industry in their own lives.
Confirmed panelists include:
Dr. Joerg Heber - Editor-in-Chief, PLOS ONE
George Porter - Engineering Librarian and CaltechAUTHORS Coordinator, Caltech
Dr. Yaser S. Abu-Mostafa - Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Caltech
Dr. Shinsuke Shimojo - Gertrude Baltimore Professor of Experimental Psychology, Caltech
DETAILS: The panel discussion will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Gates-Thomas Lab auditorium. It will be followed by an outdoor public screening of Paywall at the Sherman Fairchild Library Amphitheater. Refreshments will be served, but please bring blankets.
Both events are free, with no tickets or reservations required.
