Student Affairs Reorganization

May 13, 2024

To: The Campus Community
From:  Thomas F. Rosenbaum
Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and Professor of Physics

In an effort to be even more responsive to the needs of our students, I am delighted to announce a reconfigured and renamed office of the vice president and faculty dean of students, under the continuing leadership of Professor Kevin M. Gilmartin, Allen V.C. Davis and Lenabelle Davis Leadership Chair.

Reporting to vice president and faculty dean Gilmartin will be two faculty deans and three staff dean positions: dean of admissions; dean of students, finance and operations; and dean of students, student experience. The newly created position of dean of students, student experience will bring to campus additional high-level expertise in student life and the student experience, with the remit to enhance further the cocurricular experience of Caltech's undergraduate and graduate students. The dean of students, student experience will strive to ensure that opportunities for leadership; inclusion and belonging; wellness, athletics, and recreation; creative and cultural expression; social activities; and support for internships, fellowships, continuing studies, and careers will be available for all in an empowering and accessible manner.

As part of this reorganization, vice president Gilmartin will continue his work with two faculty colleagues, Professor David C. Chan (Harold and Violet Alvarez Professor of Biology) and Professor Jennifer A. Jahner (Professor of English), who serve as faculty dean of graduate studies and faculty dean of undergraduate studies, respectively.

Ashley M. Pallie will continue her service to Caltech in the newly designated role of dean of admissions. Ryan O'Connor will continue his service in the newly designated role of dean of students, finance and operations. Diana Jergovic, vice president, strategy implementation, will serve temporarily as acting dean of students, student experience while we conduct a nationwide search for this new position.

Please join me in expressing deep gratitude for all who work in the office of the vice president and faculty dean of students and in welcoming Ashley, Ryan, and Diana to their new roles.
