Chester Stock: Paleontology Pioneer
Back to mapChester Stock, who joined Caltech in 1926, dedicated his paleontology research to the fossil mammals of western North America and the deposits in which they occur. His early career in particular focused on the Pleistocene mammalian fauna of Rancho La Brea, or the La Brea Tar Pits. As a result of Stock's work, a skeleton of Smilodon fatalis, the saber-toothed cat, is on display in the Arms Laboratory of the Geological Sciences.
