Otters and Others: Ted Hughes to Alice Oswald
John Kerrigan, Professor of English, University of Cambridge,

Abstract: This talk will introduce a range of British and Irish poetry - from the accessible to the experimental - written over the last half century, while opening up wider questions about the relationship between the human and the animal, the civilised and the wild. The line of argument will lead to a consideration of interventions into the stuff of what used to be called Nature by Bio Art and Biopoetry. Among the work investigated will be verse by Ted Hughes, Colin Simms, Seamus Heaney, Thom Gunn, Maggie O'Sullivan, Gillian Clarke, Alice Oswald, Eduardo Kac, Christian Bök and John Kinsella. A substantial handout/anthology will illustrate the presentation and provide further reading for those who are interested.
