Core-collapse Supernova Physics in the Multimessenger Era
Sarah Gossan, LIGO, Department of Physics, Caltech,
  • Public Event

Eighty-five years following the historic proposal that core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) accompanied the transition of evolved massive stars to neutron stars, the mechanism through which these transients explode remain uncertain. Numerical simulations, arguably a fourth messenger of sorts, employ approximations to improve viability of broad parameter space studies for CCSNe. We discuss the impact of failure to accurately capture proto-neutron star hydrodynamics in the context of explodability of progenitor stars. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects for detection of GWs from CCSNe with the third-generation of ground-based GW detectors, and consider the limitations to inferring CCSN science through GW observations moving forward.
