Unusual Transformations During Natural Product Biosynthesis
Wilfred van der Donk, Richard E. Heckert Professor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign,

The genome sequencing efforts in the 21st century have led to a renaissance in discovery of new natural products and investigation of their biosynthesis. Many biosynthetic pathways contain impressive chemical transformations that demonstrate remarkable control over chemical reactivity and selectivity. This presentation will focus on several such impressive enzymatic reactions in the context of a rapidly growing class of natural products, the ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs). Their biosyntheses feature remarkable catalysts that also have led to the discovery of unanticipated new enzymatic reactions in both bacteria and mammals.
